“After hearing Eliezer Yudkowsky on episode #116 of Sam Harris’ podcast (now called ‘Making Sense’) I immediately sought out more of him. This podcast series is a reading of many of his essays, condensed into a single book. It explores a surprisingly large range of topics from the obvious A.G.I. Worries & critiques, to an interesting theological thought experiment in section VI of the book. The focus on rationality and the authors ability to levy hefty critique against his past self make this a phenomenally provocative text. Although I admit I thought the voice I was hearing was an e-reader at first, the production picks up and becomes much more vibrant after the first few episodes. Yudkowsky’s ability to simplify and coherently explain complex concepts reminds me of my first time reading Milton Friedman. The metaphors and thought experiments throughout make this a very digestible read regardless of familiarity with the field or of contemporary jargon.”
