They missed their take off slot and flight control must be having a joke, they delay the next slot.  Although the delay means that they can now head straight to the destination rather than some arbitrary point in space. Ed takes the first shift.  He's glad when the end of his shift comes, he decides to go to the entertainments room  to wind down before grabbing something to eat and settling down to sleep.
