“The pick me episode made me really think that the pick me girl concept isn’t so much a shifting one, but one that has always been rooted in cultural context. The term might have come from black Twitter but I think she’s the same as the “try hard” we all knew at my white aughts high school. So black twitter’s pick me is different from the pick me described by the girls because in North American black culture where women have to defend against the stereotype of being angry and unapproachable, the concept of being boyish, independent and unfeminine is undesirable.”
