“I’m whiter than Casper the Friendly Ghost. I’m so white that I glow in the dark. Basically, what I’m saying here is that, while I have Japanese family members, I don’t have a drop of Asian blood in my body. I don’t even know how to say “hello” in any of the Chinese languages. Like many others I discovered RotTK because of video games. During the days of the SNES (yes, I’m in my early-ish 40s) there was this amazing and rare game called Gemfire. It was a strategy game and it became one of my most favorite games ever. It was, if I remember correctly, made for the American/UK gamers by the same company that makes the Romance strategy games. I discovered Romance around game three or four and I’ve been a fan ever since. The games made me interested in the characters and once I learned that they were from a very popular Chinese novel, I had my local Barnes and Noble bookstore order them for me, since they were not carried in a Bel Air, Maryland store where virtually everyone is not Chinese, haha. The first part of the novel is in the modern-ish translation and the second part is the older and way lesser better translation- Zhuge is Chuko in there, for goodness sake. But I read them, despite being able to pronounce a single character’s name or the names of any of the cities or rivers. I’ve read them dozens of times since 2001 and I still love that story. I found this podcast while trying to find an English, unabridged audiobook for the novel so I could listen while I am at work. Sadly, there does not yet seem to be one. But I discovered this podcast during my search, so it wasn’t a total loss. This podcast is a highly enjoyable, always entertaining, and often amusing summary of the novel. As the host is Chinese he knows how to correctly pronounce the names. For all of these years, as an example, I thought that Zhou was pronounced like Zzaa-oww, but listening to this podcast I learned that it sounds more like the English word ‘jowl’. The host speaks English flawlessly. He has just a hint of an accent, but do not worry that you might have difficulty understanding him because you absolutely will not. The podcast has come to an end, sadly, but it’s still available to download and enjoy, and you 110% should give it a try; I’m sure that you will enjoy it. Now if I could only get the host to record himself reading the unabridged version of the novel so I can listen to it a work I could die a happier man.”
