“After much searching for any audio recording of any of the 4 Classic Chinese novels, I unearthed this diamond. A fantastic retelling!
I came across this pod cast after realizing that of all the hundreds of books I have read and listened to for school and pleasure, not one was from as Asian author. Not one! 3 Kingdoms seemed like a great place to start and rectify my sin, but I found the text inaccessible due to the constant barrage of cultural references and the fact I had no clue how to pronounce any of the pronouns.
This podcast ended up being an ideal intro to Chinese Lit and I can’t wait to start listening to his next retelling of Water Margin!
My one complaint is that this retelling is very basic, and John sometimes gives the game away instead of letting the listener figure it out. However, having the reader be able to add in details not found in the novel and the fact that he is Chinese and can thus properly pronounce all the pronouns easily makes up for it. I thought that the supplemental episodes and his aside explanations into the intricacies of Chinese culture gave me a better education than simply reading the novel. I’m so happy I found this!”
