Chris Beesley speaks to an extra special guest for the ninth episode of our Goodison Park: My Home series as he is joined by David Moyes, the long serving and most successful Everton manager of the Premier League era.
Meeting in Lancashire, the pair discuss the Scot’s reign of over 11 years as Blues boss as he steered them to nine top half finishes – including a club record fourth position in the Premier League in 2004/05 – feats that brought him a hat-trick of LMA Manager of the Year awards.
Taking over a team that had finished in the top half just once in the first decade of the competition, a then 38-year-old Moyes arrived at Goodison Park in March 2002 and transformed a squad containing luminaries such as Paul Gascoigne and David Ginola into an upwardly mobile outfit with hungry young players.
The Scot lifts the lid on why he chose Everton; his coining of the phrase ‘The People’s Club’, transfer buys; big characters; trophy regrets following the FA Cup final and European run plus many other memorable moments at a unique football venue that he always tried to get the best out of and which remains dear to his heart.
