Description
This seminar explores the way in which the media communicates information to the public on important social issues. It asks where the line should be drawn in fair, honest and balanced media reporting on issues that can influence  public policy to the detriment or benefit of the general community. The panel session will be introduced and moderated by Associate Professor Teresa Senserrick,  Chair NSW Chapter, Australasian College of Road Safety & Transport and Road Safety (TARS) Research, UNSW SPEAKERS AND PANEL: Jonathan Holmes, host ABC Media Watch, will discuss and illustrate good and poor journalism, citing/showing examples of irresponsible media reporting. Dr Soames Job, Executive Director, National Road Safety Council, can speak from a road safety perspective on how the media helps or hinders government policy-making as well as dispel myths about public opinion. Dr Simon Longstaff, Executive Director, St James Ethics Centre, will address the question of ethical/non-ethical media practices and associated issues for the community to consider.  That is, should there be more regulation on media reporting.
