An Opportunity to Hear Good Ideas
Shermer is a smart, well-read person with wide-ranging interests. He has access to, and is able to carry on intelligent conversations with, scientists and philosophers, teachers and intellectuals. I appreciate his lifelong commitment to objective reality and the debunking of metaphysical “woo,” a terrible trend that makes us vulnerable to self-harm and steals our money. I’ve heard some great interviews here and been introduced to some fascinating thinkers. I have one complaint, and it’s not small. Shermer likes to talk, i.e., pontificate, in order to demonstrate how much he knows, while his guest waits politely for him to shut up so they can back to the point. This is a serious flaw in many, if not most, of his interviews. His guests are on his show for a reason: they have written a book and they have a point of view and a body of knowledge that we the listeners want to absorb. Still, erudition and an eclectic range of topics prevail. Few people have the access to great guests that Shermer has, which speaks to the respect he’s accrued over a long career devoted to the search for objective truth. Recent excellent interviews have included Andrew Doyle, one of my favorite people on the topic of free speech, and Jordan Peterson. Peterson is in a category by himself. Those who hate him have never taken the time to listen to what he has to say. I disagree with much of what he stands for, but I always listen because he has a command of ideas and the English language that is unparalleled. This is the best interview Peterson has ever given, IMO.

More reviews of The Michael Shermer Show
I used to see Shermer as one of my ‘go to’ guys for objective, skeptical content but he is hopelessly biased and partisan now. Opinion is fine, but it should never be cloaked as fact, something that Shermer does more and more these days.

Has a good and interesting mix of guests. However for someone who is big in skeptic magazine he shows no signs of critical thinking. The interviews are basically a platform for his guests to espouse their views with no push back or challenges. I wanted to like it but gave up after the Taubes...Read full review »
