Across the world tonight Scots poet Robert Burns will be celebrated with a meal of haggis, neeps and tatties.
Robert Burns was born on January 25 1759 and died aged 37 in 1796 yet in his lifetime he penned more than 550 poems and songs.
In this episode we learn more about Robert Burns and how Burns Night came about. We also chat about memorable Burns Night suppers Gerard has attended and whether haggis is even necessary for a Burns Night support.
Professor Gerard Carruthers is the Francis Hutcheson Professor of Scottish Literature at the University of Glasgow and General Editor of the multi-volume Oxford University Press Collected Works of Robert Burns.
He is a Trustee of Ellisland Museum, an Advisor to the National Trust for Scotland and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
