“Informative, delightful podcast with two affable experts about how music is used help tell stories in cinema, as Jon and Andy go down the list of the AFI’s choices for the top 25 film scores, and they devote ninety in-depth minutes to each score. Great discourse about composition, aesthetic choices, and the movies themselves, placing the films and their scores in a historic context and within the context of each composer’s body of work. They also question the notion of lists ranking works of art, and I’m absolutely with them: lists are ludicrous; still, they’re game and play along. I look forward to them busting out of the AFI’s list, and seeing what roads they choose to explore. I cried both times I listened to the “E.T.” episode—yes, I listened twice, as I did to the episodes on “The Planet of the Apes” and “Vertigo.” Added bonus: there’s a fantastic episode on this year’s Oscar nominees, and a fascinating discussion about Hans Zimmer’s score for “Dunkirk.””
