“This is a review for the entire series so far but everything said is applicable to the first:
Giving something 5 stars does not mean it is perfect - nor is Shadowmagic. The corresponding descriptions for the stars lower than 5 are simply inadequate. Shadowmagic is better than "Ok" or "Good". It is great. It is a light-harted, fun, funny, action-adventure that has an interesting story, plot twists and is children/teenage/young-adult friendly. It is like a good, family friendly, action-adventure television series that leaves you hanging at the end of every episode and anxiously 'waiting for next week's episode'.
Yes...the good guys are good, the bad guys are bad, you don't have to know how the magic works, you know the main character is not going to die what ever perril he is in...but you stay for the bigger story.
I am more of a science fiction fan. I have only read Lord of The Rings. Not The Wheel of Time. So I do now know how Shadowmagic holds up to other fantasy. It probably does not. Shadowmagic, none the less, is fun and worth your time.
The only negative I can throw at it, from a podcast/audiobook production quality standpoint, is that the volume difference between the voice and cross-over sound is a bit too high at some points. So you push up the volume to hear everything clearly...only to have your ears sometimes blasted a bit. It is less of a problem though as the series progress.”
