“PODCAST FORMAT:
The trio of Felix Salmon, Cathy O’Neil, and Jordan Weissmann dish up a well-produced weekly discussion exploring current events, trends, and informed speculation on the world of business and finance. The bulk of the 30-45 minute show serves up 5-10 minute bite-sized segments in which the hosts explain, and then discuss important news from the week. The podcast concludes with a “numbers lightning round” which allows each of the three hosts to bring up an off-topic, but interesting story via introduction of a mystery number such as “My number is $100 million, which is the bribe paid to a court in Munich by…”.
WHAT I LIKE:
This podcast is a great balance of explanation and exploration for listeners who do not posses in-depth knowledge of business and finance. Each host brings a very different professional background and worldview to the table. As a group they pose each other many of the questions that I want answered, and focus on explanation instead of judgment. The hosts are very good at giving some insight into the complex topics that are thrown around without proper discussion in much of the business media. As a fellow empathic, data-driven individual, I especially enjoy the commentary of Cathy O’Neil who has an impressive data science and finance background, and often frames her discussion by the ways in which the big news of the week could affect the average person.
WHAT I WANT IMPROVED:
Although the hosts are good at providing background and explaining jargon, there are still current events, people, and general knowledge that I wish was explained a bit more. I don’t enjoy comments like “unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last five years you’ve already heard of … but if you haven’t…” . If you don’t have time to fully explain something, perhaps point listeners to a previous episode where the background was explained in more detail, or provide another resource to gain enough context. Because the hosts live and breathe business and finance, the hosts sometimes discuss “obvious” topics that I might have to Google myself. Additionally, many of the topics discussed are so interesting, that I want to know where I can find more information. A plug to an article or other resources that you recommend would be appreciated. Finally, I would like the hosts to be more explicit about when they are discussing something which is in their area of expertise, and when they are discussing topics that they aren’t as familiar with. I get the impression that all of the hosts have a phenomenal grasp of the world of New York business and finance, but lack the macroeconomic experience to give informed speculation on some of the topics they discuss. It’s okay to say “I don’t know”, or even better, find a guest in advanced who can give a more informed view.
COMPARED TO SIMILAIR PODCASTS I AM SUBSRIBED TO:
Those who enjoy NPR: Planet Money, EconTalk with Russ Roberts, and The Economist: Editors Picks will enjoy that real-world business and finance gap that Slate Money fills comfortably. In terms of analytic rigor and depth of discussion, Slate Money falls somewhere in between NPR: Planet Money, and EconTalk. By design Slate Money lacks the phenomenally well-written essay style of The Economist, but it is also more approachable in its non-academic discussion.”
