Historically inaccurate
I hold historians to a high standard; especially if they are attempting to influence the reader or listener. Not only is Ed Helms fast and loose with the facts, he is completely wrong. He attempts to use humor and dramatization to get his point across. This is even more dangerous when his facts are wrong. Instead of educating people about the truth, every uniformed listener will now be repeating his falsehoods. The first episode is about Able Archer, a NATO war game exercise in 1983. In the podcast, Ed Helms states that clearly Secretary of State George Shultz knew how close we came to an accidental nuclear war during Able Archer. Shultz didn’t know! In fact, we didn’t know how close we came until after the fall of the Soviet Union when the Soviets told us. The Soviet’s early warning system malfunctioned during the exercise and detected a US nuclear missile launch. In addition, the US mindset at the time was the US was good and the Soviet Union was evil. - We believed the Soviets knew we would never start a nuclear war because the US was good and they were evil - We felt the only reason we had the nuclear weapons was to defend ourselves from the evil empire and they knew that. - We didn’t fathom the idea that the Soviets were scared of the US starting a nuclear war. - I stopped listening to the podcast after this. The podcast is just dramatized garbage being represented as the facts.

Ed is a great story teller and it’s delivered with just the right amount of humour.
