Yes yes yes
I taught elementary for 18 years and every word of this report rings true to me. I thought for a long time that I was a deficient reading teacher because I just didn’t “get it.” I didn’t understand why 10 years olds read so poorly and made such little progress under the scripted curriculum I was given. If teachers had flexibility to teach as they think best, I could have pulled out some phonics practice. Fortunately, I figured some of this out while my daughter was a toddler and I began searching for a private school that focused on phonics. She is now in first grade and learning to read. She would not have succeeded under a cuing system. She was read to daily since the day she came home from the hospital but was not magically picking it up until the systematic phonics instruction she’s receiving this year. Sad for all the kids without this opportunity. This report is spot on.
