According to Luke 2, everyone went to his own town to register because of the the required census. Did Joseph have no family who was also returning to register or who lived there still who would’ve been with them also? It always appears that they are alone and looking for lodging but I would think there would be other family also along unless the family was perhaps not supportive of the situation.
