“Writing this review pains me. I love interacting with the universe of Spider-Fans and the Crawlspace is one of the defining Spider-Man fansites/podcasts on the net. I listened to the show for years for all the knowledge contained within (they do really know their stuff) and learned a ton about the character and his world. Yet I would never recommend the show to others because it felt like a guilty pleasure. Within all that knowledge was a entitled sense of ownership of the character which led to so much pre-judging and negative speculation that it became hard to listen to. Reviewers getting angry over the Lizard’s lack of a lab coat before the 1st “Amazing Spider-Man” film was released to casual mockery of Slott’s tenure on the book. For awhile it felt like former fans gathering to discuss something currently painful to them and I found that negativity influencing the amount of fun that I had being a fan of Spider-Man, not because of the character and what’s being done with him but because of the podcast.
That was coupled with the casually sexist attitude of the show, which means well but seems unaware of the attitude it is expressing. This extends onto the actual website itself, with the Spider-Girls column openly objectifying women rather than actually presenting Spider-Fans who happen to be women as well. With the mass exodus of hosts that I felt value in leaving the show and George’s reappearance as a key figure (the very person who would come on to review books after admitting that he didn’t buy them or read them) I just had to stop. It pains me because there are few places with so much Spider-Man knowledge and their intentions are good. Brad obviously spends countless time running the network he does, though the podcast could use some editing.”
