Funny Spiels story
Let’s get the review over quickly so I can tell a funny Spiels story. Great show with very entertaining banter between Spiels and Hooley. Great Buckeye insight and Hooley’s ability to tell it like it is with regards to the Browns is great to listen to....yada yada yada 5 stars. Now the Spiels story. About 6 or 7 years ago my wife was coaching middle school girls basketball. After the regular season ended they played in a local tournament. As anyone that has watched this level of basketball before knows, most games run longer than planned for. I arrived just a little prior to the start time but the game before is just starting the 3rd quarter. I don’t remember both of the schools but one of them was a middle school in UA. As I walk into the gym I see someone sitting in the bleachers wearing raggedy looking sweats and has what appears to be slippers on. For about 5 minutes I laugh to myself about the fashion sense of this quirky person. All of a sudden there is a loose ball during the game and that person with the amazing fashion sense yells with the loudest, most intimidating voice I had heard in a long time “you better hustle and get after that loose ball!!!”. Once my pulse returned to normal I looked to my right and it all made sense. Spiels was watching one of his daughters play in the tourney. For someone that grew up watching him play on Saturdays and Sundays it was exactly what I expected. Fully supportive of his daughter, not critical or second guessing of coaches, just 100% intensity and nothing but your best effort is acceptable. Great podcast guys! PS I don’t think that local charities would even accept the clothes Spiels was wearing if he were to try to donate them.
