We discuss Blue Beetle (2023), a DCEU action/adventure/sci-fi film with genuine emotion despite some serious writing flaws. It connects with the audience on topics such as student debt, family, immigration and financial hardship. Of course, nothing makes it more relatable than superpowers granted by parasitic alien tech. That's happened to everyone, amirite?
Yes, we know an araña is a spider, not a beetle. Listen to the episode - it makes sense! Plus, listen to Chris try to flex his...

We discuss the sci-fi/drama film, Melancholia (2011). It's about two sisters, their strained relationship, their mental illnesses, and an impending world-ending astronomical event.
Mental health is health. This episode deals heavily in topics of anxiety and depression specifically, and mental health in general. There is no shame in seeking medical treatment, whether the issue is a broken bone or a mental crisis. If you need assistance in NYC, contact the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline....

This week we discuss This Is Spinal Tap (1984), a music mockumentary telling the story of fictitious English band Spinal Tap as they circle the drain on a comically bad tour. The film is legendary for its improv, catapulted the careers of those involved, and invented the mockumentary genre itself. Joining us for the discussion are Rob from Metalhead Journeys, and Ray from Deluxe Edition Podcast and 10 Cent Beer Knight.

To coincide with tax day, we discuss Stranger Than Fiction (2006). It's a story about taxes and IRS audits, love and literature, writer's block and fate. And notably it's the Will Ferrell movie for people who don't like Will Ferrell movies. You can read Chris' article defending Stranger Than Fiction here.

It's time for another Pec-Off, and this one is probably the most challenging yet! We're matching the aliens of your dentist's nightmares with Predator against Venom. Much like a teeth cleaning that unexpectedly became a root canal, this one didn't go according to plan, except it's way more entertaining. And yes, the sex symbol category is both horrifying and hilarious!

We discuss the sci-fi comedy, Galaxy Quest (1999). Equal parts satire of and homage to Star Trek, the cast is stellar (heh), and the writing is better than the average comedy. Could we have found a comedy that Elle likes???

We discuss The Holdovers (2023), a film that tells the story of a cranky history teacher, grieving cook, and troubled student forced to spend their holiday break with each other. It was somehow, improbably, nominated for 5 Oscars. It's supposed to be a comedy, but aren't comedies supposed to be funny? It feels like it wants to be a feel-good, uplifting Christmas movie, but it doesn't do that well either. It has all the grace of an elderly hungover man doing hot yoga.

We discuss the 1982 horror classic, Poltergeist. And more specifically, we discuss strange decisions like sending away your child alone in a taxi, giving your child the most terrifying clown, and letting your child ride a kitchen ghost luge. And that's in addition to continuity errors, a lack of tech understanding, and logical flubs pertaining to property development. But it's still a horror classic, and Chris earned a punishment shot for not seeing it sooner. Check out our YouTube channel...
