It's Beto who saves the day when Lydia is short of the money needed to pay El Chacal for their safe passage into the U. S.; Lydia makes friends with Marisol, a migrant who's already been to the U. S. but was deported back to Mexico, and Soledad tastes the freedom of American soil.

As Laura, and her friends Minnie, Ida, and Mary Power sign each other's autograph albums, a haughty Nellie Oleson declares that name cards are all the rage from the East--and as Nellie declares designs on Almanzo Wilder, it's Laura who finally gets a ride in Almanzo's buggy and fine horses.
