“On the plus side, the three hosts have a nice chemistry and it’s a joy to hear a conversation among women my own age that speaks to so many of the experiences I had in my 20s. Laura Leighton saying that she wishes she had not been so mean to herself when she was that age? Boom! Completely on target and spoke to me in a way that almost made me tear up. It’s authentic and relatable and all three come across as people who are down to earth and unpretentious—that alone makes them a rarity in their business, I suspect.
I had actually just started rewatching the show (or, really, watching it for real since the first time around I was a casual consumer at best and I think I dropped out after the first couple of seasons), having it play in the background while I work; it’s a secret shame and a very welcome respite from the real world. So when I stumbled on the podcast, I thought it would be fun to hear the backstories—and they are amusing and interesting. I’m a fan of movie and television trivia, so on that score, this is right up my alley.
On the other hand, just like my experience with the original broadcast, I can’t see myself hanging in for recaps of every single episode. There are 30 episodes in the first season alone; there’s no way I’m going to be able to stay engaged for a blow by blow of every outfit, every bit of dialogue, for years to come. I’d much rather hear about their experiences making the show, how they interacted, how and with whom they’ve maintained their bonds.
My suggestion: compress the content and recap (quickly!) several episodes at once, with more emphasis on the experience and less on the minute by minute recap of the show itself. People have watched the show—most of us recently—so we already know what happened. And don’t be afraid to “go there” with the backstory. What was it like to be dating someone you worked with? How did the rest of the cast react to those relationships? There had to be tension—let’s hear about the warts.
And when you’ve covered all of the Melrose Place stuff, stick around because I could listen to these three talk about all kinds of topics. Just not politics, please.”
