“When I first stumbled on Stoicism a few years back I quickly realized 2 things about Stoic debate and scholarship. First, much of it was purist in tone and second, it was largely atheistic . Once I read all the common texts I found it hard to see how one could justify upholding the ancient belief and practice while completely ignoring or rejecting the religious aspects of the philosophy. It seems to me you do a great disservice to Stoicism when you simply discard parts that aren’t palatable to modern anti-religious sensibilities. Every podcast I listen to ignores the religious aspect or goes out of the way to denigrate it. That is why Stoicism On Fire is such a great podcast and easily my favorite. It takes the whole of Stoicism, religion and all, and offers the bold assertion that Stoicim is a religious philosophy and if you reject the religion you strip Stoicism of its meaning and power for modern man. No doubt this view is controversial but it is the view that best describes the ancient Stoic path and lays out that path for modern times. At the least, this podcast provides a positive counter argument to think about as we walk in the Stoic way.”
