Beauty and nuance
This story feels like the antithesis to Janet Malcolm’s classic text “The Journalist and the Murderer,” which positions journalism as fundamentally predatory and extractive. The relationship that develops between journalist Maria Hinojosa and Suave, a young inmate who was locked up for life when he was just a minor, has all the nuance and texture of a family relationship. I’m hoping this series will challenge our notions of journalistic detachment, but also tackle the hard question of what might replace it. The answer isn’t likely to be a simple one.
