I wanted to sympathize with the victim
But found it really difficult to do so. She ignored so many warning signs. How could she feel so coerced by someone she never even met? She just came across as desperate and whiny. I am not surprised the police did not want to do anything. Maybe things were not explained sufficiently, but I listened to the entire show and just didn’t get it. She also seemed prone to exaggeration. She kept saying she gave up a decade of her life but they only “dated” 3 years.

If you don’t meet a person after two or three written exchanges, you cut contact. No way would I ever allow a phantom to string me along. Same goes for online dating. Too many people out there who are married with children posing as singles to test their “market value.” Or to do some catfishing.

I enjoyed the story, the narrator, and the general layout. This was a carefully crafted and compelling story with some big surprises. I recommend listening to it if you are interested in better understanding cat fishing, how people can be drawn in by scams, and how to protect yourself online.
