RE: Should leaders be feared or loved?
I have great respect for Adam, his work, and this podcast—it’s consistently insightful and engaging. But Niall Ferguson’s performance here was excruciating. His painfully affected accent aside, the way he painted Glasgow as some monolithic, provincial, angry, and violent backwater was not only reductive but out of touch. He hasn’t lived there for decades, yet he droned on as if he were still walking its streets daily, a self-appointed expert on the city’s soul. Then there was his bizarre anecdote about throwing a chair at a student whose work supposedly “wasn’t up to scratch.” He even boasted about teaching Sacha Baron Cohen at university but admitted he wouldn’t have thrown a chair at him because “he’s at least a foot taller.” So, we’re left to assume the unfortunate recipient of his chair-throwing bravado was someone smaller, weaker, and less likely to defend themselves. The whole thing felt more like a strange flex than a meaningful reflection, leaving a sour taste in what could have been a valuable discussion.

Adam has a way of discussing complex matters in very easily digestible ways. His work is easy to absorb and the lessons learned can be utilized in your real work/home life. Couldn’t recommend this more.
