Dark D&D Fantasy
I’m often put off by a lot of play through D&D podcasts for the simple reason that a lot of them seem more geared towards comedy than exploring a gritty fantasy world. Take of the Manticore thankfully ditches “amusing capers” in favour of a much darker, more grim feel. Promising a story where “the dice rule” Tale of the Manticore is a D&D tale without plot armour. No character is sacred, and the dice dictate everyone’s fates. The story is very well written, the narration first class and - more importantly - the content is extremely engaging. This isn’t a simple retelling of “the party went there, killed these things and stole this loot” but it takes the time to delve into the backgrounds of the protagonists (and the antagonists!) and to build out the world. Highly recommended for those of you wanting to scratch that dark fantasy itch!

It’s solo play so there’s no banter or goofing off between players, just a solid dice-driven, dark fantasy story. The sound design is particularly stand-out––it’s well crafted and additive to...Read full review »
