So here’s the thing…
You don’t have to be a horror fan to enjoy Neil’s show. His interviewees give some of the most valuable writing advice I’ve come across, and maybe because they are genre writers, what they have to say is more down-to-earth and practical than the advice most literary authors give. Their experience of writing - the process, the publication, and the business of it - is hella useful and interesting. In almost every case, I have ended up reading the books of the authors Neil interviews, if for no other reason than I’m impressed with how articulate, thoughtful, and knowledgeable they are and so want to see that in action in their writing. As an interviewer, Neil balances being a fan and a scholar of horror. His questions are based on close and thoughtful readings of his guest’s works, as well as how they are in conversation with their predecessors’ or contemporaries’ works. I’ve been recommending his podcast to all of my writer friends, regardless of whether they are writers or lovers of horror.
