On Wednesday, The New York Times reported that federal prosecutors had indicted New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) as part of a corruption investigation. The next day, prosecutors unveiled a five-count indictment against Adams, 64, charging him with bribery, conspiracy, fraud, and soliciting illegal foreign campaign donations. Adams, who denies the charges and pled not guilty on Friday, is the first mayor of New York City to be charged with a federal crime while still in office.

On Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris said she supports eliminating the Senate’s filibuster rule to pursue legislation codifying abortion access nationwide. The comments, made in an interview with Wisconsin Public Radio after a campaign stop in the state, mark the first time Harris has called for an end to the filibuster since she became the 2024 Democratic nominee, though she has supported similar proposals in the past.

The pager attacks in Lebanon. On Tuesday, hundreds of pagers carried by members of Hezbollah, a U.S.-designated terrorist group, detonated simultaneously across Lebanon. On Wednesday, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve met in Washington, D.C., and agreed to a 0.5% — or 50 basis point — cut to the federal funds effective rate. The 0.5% cut, which lowered the federal interest rate to between 4.75% and 5.00%, exceeded general economist expectations of a 0.25% cut. On Sunday, former President Donald Trump was targeted in what the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has deemed an assassination attempt at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Last week, a 14-year-old boy killed two fellow students and two teachers and wounded nine others when he opened fire inside Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. The suspect was taken into custody minutes after the shooting began, and he has been charged with four counts of felony murder.
