“This episode spoke so directly to me. I left a district in Nevada 2 years ago and since then I have realized how destructive of a system it was. Beyond individual lesson plans each day, implementing state directive Read by 3, lack of resources, technology, and training there was one day I decided to never go back. My school had regular (1-2 times a year) lockdowns due to threats on or near campus. This one day we were doing dismissal and had to reverse evacuate into the building due to a threat on our campus. I hid in a room with kindergarten and first graders telling them that everything would be ok while hearing on the radio panicked conversations. I texted my loved ones goodbye. The other teachers in the room did not follow any of our protocol. After what felt like hours we were lifted out and told the man with a gun had been arrested and the kids could go home. I went directly to admin and told them how worried I was for future threats due to lack of implementation. The response I got was “luckily nothing happened this time, hopefully we continue to get lucky”. I looked at her and said “I will never teach at this school again”.
Everything in this episode is so true. We are continually asked to give up more, put up with more and do more. As American teachers we are also now being asked (explicitly or otherwise) to give up our lives. This is not what we signed up for.
I now teach in MN and thins are much better. Are there still issues? Of course. Will I continue teaching? I don’t know. The pressure and stress is undue.
Thanks for the episode, it’s so true.
