“An interpretation of The Secret History of the Mongols. It’s framed via an unexpected friendship. It’s really cool to have this kind of story and this kind of telling. That said, I found it really hard to find and follow the plot threads in the first 4 episodes, perhaps because each line of dialog winds a flowery path through pretty language and a little knot of tangled emotions and decades of nostalgia and regret creating conflicting motivations and levels of sarcasm and irony polished off with disarming wry self effacing charm and humor... plus multiple names/titles per character (I think?). It really must have been something to write and act, infusing each line with so many layers. Even though I could untangle the emotions of each line, most of the time I then didn’t have enough mental bandwidth left to remember how the action fit into the greater story to put it all together. So it sits like separate scenes and characters in my mind. And then in episode 5 that all came together and made sense. If I had to sum it up I’d call it academic, the kind of thing you’d study in a class with a guide and supplemental materials for context, so now I’m curious. It’s lovely to have people creating work of this complexity and importance that reaches beyond the Western canon.”
