Federal health officials are warning of an increase in cases of a mysterious but polio-like condition affecting children up to 18 years of age. It affects the nervous system, specifically, an area of the spinal cord, causing muscle weakness and paralysis in the arms and legs. Sometimes these symptoms are temporary, sometimes they persist, and doctors don’t understand why or who is most at risk.
