Manuel and Patricia Oliver lost their son, 17-year-old Joaquin, during the Parkland school shooting. Manuel, an artist, turned his art toward activism after his son’s murder. The Olivers have since founded a nonprofit organization, Change the Ref, a platform inspired by their son to educate and empower youth in the movement to end gun violence. Manuel says the nonprofit’s name came from a conversation he had with Joaquin, a few months before he died. Listen to this powerful story.
