“As a fan of the historical characters Anne Bonny & Mary Read, this was an absolute delight to listen to.
First of all, the musical format fits the pirate genre so well it now feels like a crime that there is not more productions of this type. You could say even that, with the sailors’ tendencies to write ballads about themselves, there is no genre more fitted for musicals. The production plays into it deliciously by making sea shanties an integral part of the storytelling and not just a quirky decoration.
Anne Bonny’s actress voice, in particular, is magnificent and pulls you into the story right ahead with her horse-riding song.
As for the writing, I have nothing but praises.
(Spoilers ahead)
The way Read’s queer identity was handled felt realistic, and I think it was a good choice not to go to deep into it all the while making it clear she can’t be fitted into the norm. She and Anne’s love story, in the same way, is brought with a subtlety that may makes one heart’s flutter. The reveal of their feelings for one another through the boy’s song shattered mine.
My highlight would have to be the inclusion of Daniel Defoe as an active main character, a rarity in any golden age of piracy-inspired media. Not only this gives a meta perspective to the story, but his character in itself is written interestingly and you quickly get attached to him. My only regret is that the story is so short that you dont have much time to see his relationship with Anne & Mary develop further. Similarly, I would have loved to see more of Mary’s backstory and maybe some more insight on her (maybe in a potential second season?).
Overall this is a great adaptation that can be enjoyed by both fans & people with no prior knowledge of the characters before, with great songs and writing on top of it. Thank you for pulling out such quality work, I will be looking into your other ones !”
