“Having listened to Haunted, the other Danny Robins podcast, I perhaps should have realised that it was maybe optimistic to hope for some rigorous journalism and healthy scepticism, but after a vaguely promising start, I allowed myself to get quietly excited about this. Unfortunately, this has already started descending into the staged silliness of Most Haunted. The dramatised bits just make it feel less plausible – the actress playing Shirley sounds about 12, even at her own wedding, and Toby Jones sounds uncharacteristically clunky.
The fact that Robins interviews Ralph Keeton with an actual degree of seriousness seals the deal: visit his website and you’ll see that he’s like a Peter Kay character from Phoenix Nights. Why is a journalist wasting his (and our) time talking to an entertainer? Add to this the bizarre and unnecessary night spent in a ‘haunted’ house (what did that add?), the wailing banshee music and the complete absence of any credible witnesses (just Shirley herself who doesn’t sound remotely convincing) and you have what can best be described as a wasted opportunity. The few people who sound like they could corroborate the facts just aren’t chased up eg the Daily Mail journalist who spent the night in Shirley’s bed: is she still alive? if so, where is she?
And then we have Robins’ breathy, lispy delivery and his regular sign off of “Don’t have nightmares…” – really? 🙄
These supernatural podcasts always promise so much and then deliver something that wouldn’t be out of place on a freeview channel on a weekday afternoon… Disappointing.”
