‘Africa is seeing the continued rise of women in business and politics, but there's still a long way to go’

"The unseen, yet unbreakable barrier that keeps minorities and women from rising to the upper level of the corporate ladder, regardless of their qualifications or achievements”, - definition of the glass ceiling.
The Business Council for Africa in partnership with FBN Bank hosted a meeting, to discuss the current issues facing women in business. Despite there being substantial data showing that diversity in general, including equality in female leadership of companies significantly increases profitability, women account for only 12.5% of FTSE 100 directors. Some boards have taken a target driven approach; however progress in the executive ranks and pipeline remains very slow. There is a critical need for a renewed push and increase in the pace of change.
The roundtable meeting was an opportunity for an open dialogue with business leaders and to consider the best practises to encourage African women to break the glass ceiling.
The roundtable meeting chaired by:
Rolake Akinkugbe, Head of Energy and Natural Resources, FBN Merchant Bank
The Nigerian High Commissioner, H.E George Adesola Oguntade addressed IA-BCA members at Addleshaw Goddard, speaking on the trade and investment relationships between the UK and Nigeria, and the possibilities going forward.
