The benchmark to which comedy should be measured
To demand three hours of anyone's entertainment allowance in a week is a big ask for most shows, but The Best Show on WFMU leaves you demanding more. It's more than a radio show; it's a universe, and like any universe, once you understand the rules and characters, you are drawn deep into its secret language and in-jokes. Not to say it isn't entertaining on face-value; Tom Scharpling holds court with callers (both real and 'fake') and excellent guests from the world of comedy and music like a benevolent dictator at court, wielding scalpel-like wit, scathing put downs and occasional heartfelt declarations of love for the good things in life. It's funny, relaxed, witty, innovative and accessible; this is comedy radio at its finest. The time passes like time spent with an old friend, endlessly joyful and sought after when it is gone. You can take my records, my DVDs and my books, but you can never take my Best Show.

This truely is the Best show. Not only on WFMU, but on the entire radio. If he were on NPR, while they had a fundraiser, they would get so much money that everyone on at the station would be driving sports cars.Read full review »
