“I am, was raised and have been for my entire life a defiantly proud Southerner. I have lived in 6 states and 3 countries, I have carried my y’alls with me and deployed them with a relish in classrooms, boardrooms and bars. The South is a beautiful, rich, colorful, vibrant, complex, sad and joyful place as anyone who has ever lived in or loved it knows. It does not need apology or redemption, it needs and deserves a loving emotionally generous exploration of all its facets and the facets of all of its people. Of the beautiful stories of generations of folks that together have woven this countries richest and most diverse tapestry.
This website and its podcast, in a fit of 2016 driven pique, have lost sight of that and fallen prey to the sweeping generalizations and label hurling of the “aggrieved.” By focusing on and accentuating what has hurt and not the goodness that has come from our very special region and people - inclusive of our shared traumas - you have undermined your pretended to goal of lifting those same things and people up for the personal gratification of tearing our region down. You have perpetuated it’s hurtful stereotypes. That shift into willful ignorance and sanctimonious condemnation, devoid of either forgiveness or depth, is as my grandmother would say is “jes a crying shame” This podcast’s conclusory focus and tone, most of all its season finale title, show a very un-southern inability to grasp the subtitles and shades of gray in life as it is and always has been lived in our South. And that for both you and us your potential listeners is truly unfortunate. Take your bitterness and pack it away, personally I suggest an extra helping of grits.”
