“John and Steve,
I don’t do twitter nor instagram and you don’t provide an email, so I’ll try to connect here. Great part 1 on Ordinary People. So many insights into mental health issues. Appreciate the straight talk. Don’t take it as criticism, but there were a couple possible additional connections that were missed that I wanted to point out. Your talk about “normal” was so spot on (appeal to it is almost always a facade, total psychological construct, “no such thing” in reality). I was surprised you didn’t make the connection back to “ordinary” in the title. Second minor thing: You mentioned that Conrad’s time in hospital was never shown, only talked about, but that parallels completely what came up later in the film that Beth *never* visited Conrad in the hospital (“I had the flu!” Heh.).
Anyway, great work and I look forward to part 2. I really have zero empathy for the Beth character, maybe due to recent politics: her line later about “of course I think only about myself and so does everyone else, I’m just more honest about it” is *complete* and utter narcissism.
Jeff”
