The Apostle Paul mentioned baptism on behalf of our ancestors in the New Testament, but the authority and method of performing this ordinance was lost with the death of the New Testament Apostles. However, this ordinance and authority were restored to Joseph Smith, and baptism for the dead is one way we can participate in the gathering of Israel.
