I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and today is Global Cat Day.... But Andrew.... don't you hate cats! No.... I don't. At least, not anymore... I've always been a dog person. But we involuntarily had mice in our townhouse several years ago, cats made sense at that point. And then... well now... I'm still a dog person but cats are cool too... at least our cats are. So today is the day we celebrate those fuzzy overlords who act like they own everything (and maybe, they do). There is an idea for a movie - Planet of the Cats? Today, whether you’re a proud cat parent or just a bystander to the feline empire, this day is all about appreciating our furry friends and their… unique personalities. And, of course, it’s a perfect time to honor them with a quote that fits the occasion. Today's quote comes from Charles Dickens, who once said: “What greater gift than the love of a cat?” Now, if you’ve ever been around a cat, you know this quote hits home. The love of a cat is… well, let’s say selective. One moment they’re snuggled up in your lap, purring away like you’re the most important person in the world. The next, they’re giving you that look—like they’re the king, and you’re just there to provide food, shelter, and adoration. But that’s what makes their love so special, right? It’s not given freely or carelessly. You’ve got to earn it. Much like life’s best gifts, the love of a cat isn’t something you can demand or rush. It happens on their time, when they feel like it—and when it does, it’s a reminder that trust, loyalty, and affection are worth the wait. On Global Cat Day, this quote from Dickens reminds you that while cats may be aloof, the love they offer is precious—mainly because it’s rare. Unlike a dog, who will greet you at the door with endless enthusiasm, a cat will make you work for every purr. And when you finally get that head bump or slow blink, it feels like you’ve been granted the ultimate gift. It’s a bit of a metaphor for life, too. Sometimes, the things you cherish most are the ones you have to work hardest for. Whether it’s a relationship, a career, or yes—even a cat’s affection—there’s something deeply satisfying about earning it. It's that quiet, almost imperceptible reward that makes it all worth it. And did you know that a cat's purr has healing properties... according to some studies the sound of a cat purring heals bone fractures faster... So there you have it. Those darn cats are good for something! So today, give your feline friend an extra treat (if they allow it, of course) and take a moment to appreciate the lesson they’re teaching you: The best gifts are often the ones you wait for, the ones that come on their own terms. And that’s it for today’s episode of The Daily Quote. On this Global Cat Day, I hope you take a moment to celebrate the love of your cat—or, if you don’t have one, maybe just admire their quiet independence from afar. Remember Dickens’ words and the idea that the love of a cat, like many things in life, is truly a gift. Take care and enjoy those feline vibes. And I'll be back again tomorrow for another Daily Quote!
