I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and today is October 22nd. Today is National Make a Dog’s Day, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that dogs have an uncanny ability to make our days better. Whether it's with a wag of the tail or a goofy smile, they know how to lift our spirits. But today, the tables turn—it's our chance to make their day, to give them that extra bit of love, care, and attention that they give us all year long. And that brings me to today’s quote, which comes from none other than Mahatma Gandhi, who said: "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." Now, that’s a powerful statement. It goes beyond just our love for pets and speaks to something deeper—the idea that how we treat animals says a lot about our compassion, our values, and who we are as a society. In a way, Gandhi’s words remind us that animals, including our beloved dogs, are a reflection of how well we live up to our own moral responsibilities. Dogs, in particular, give us an opportunity to practice kindness every day. They’re our companions, but they’re also completely dependent on us. In return, they offer us their unwavering loyalty, their love, and sometimes, their hilarious quirks—like when they chase their tails or stare at you like you’re the most fascinating thing on earth. And, to them, you probably are. But Gandhi's point also extends beyond our personal pets. It’s about how we, as a society, care for all animals. It’s no coincidence that we feel a special joy when we see dogs being treated well—whether it's a rescue pup finding a loving home or a dog getting pampered at the park. How we treat animals reflects the empathy we carry inside us, and if we’re aiming to be a kinder, better world, it starts right there—with the creatures that can’t speak for themselves, but certainly have a lot to teach us about loyalty, patience, and love. So, on National Make a Dog’s Day, let’s go the extra mile for our furry friends. Whether it’s spoiling them with an extra treat, spending a little more time playing, or even considering adopting a dog who needs a home, today is about showing them the same unconditional love they show us every single day. And while we’re at it, let’s remember Gandhi’s message: how we treat our animals says something about who we are. The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. So if not only for your dog, do it for your Nation! Let’s aim for greatness—not just by making our own dogs' day but by treating all animals with the care and respect they deserve. Thanks for spending time with me today. Go out there and make your dog’s day a little brighter, and in doing so, you might just make the world a bit brighter too. And I'll see you tomorrow for another Daily Quote.
