Welcome to The Daily Quote – a podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I’m your host, Andrew McGivern, and today is October 26th.
Now, today is a special one because it’s Make a Difference Day – a day that reminds you and me that making an impact doesn’t require a grand stage or a superhero cape. Sometimes, it’s the small, quiet actions that ripple out to create waves of change.
That brings me to our quote for the day, and I think it perfectly captures the spirit of this holiday. It’s from Edward Everett Hale, who said:
“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.”Now that’s the kind of quote that makes you sit up a little straighter, right?
Here’s the thing about Make a Difference Day – it’s not about saving the world in one dramatic swoop. It’s about those "somethings" we can each do. Hale’s words cut right through any excuse we might have about being “just one person” or feeling like our contributions won’t matter.
He reminds you that, yes, you may be just one individual – but that doesn’t make your actions insignificant. Every great movement, every social shift, and every piece of progress started because someone decided to do something. And that "something" is often a lot closer to home than you think.
Maybe it's helping a neighbor carry groceries. Maybe it's volunteering an hour at the local shelter. It could even be as simple as offering a genuine smile to someone who looks like they need it. And hey, I get it – a smile might not seem like much. But think about the last time someone really smiled at you when you were having a rough day. It probably made a bigger difference than they’ll ever know.
So, on this Make a Difference Day, remember that you don’t have to move mountains to make an impact. Start where you are, with what you have, and do the "something" you can do today. Because even if you can’t do everything, your small actions can make a big difference.
And let’s be honest – if the world waited for superheroes to show up and fix everything, we’d be waiting a long time.
It’s the everyday heroes, the quiet changemakers like you, who keep things moving forward.
That's going to do it for today. I hope you feel inspired to go out there and do your "something." I’ll see you tomorrow with another quote to start your day right.
Until then, keep making a difference – even in the smallest ways.
And if you know someone that would like to listen to a Daily Quote... share the show with them.
Take care and I'll see you tomorrow for another Daily Quote.
