“Oh dear. I've been a fan of Dave Gorman's for many years, and generally think he goes from strength to strength. I loved the bike tour interviews, and the Frank Skinner stand-in slots ... but this Absolute podcast is just dreadful. I've listened to about 6 or 7 of them now, waiting ... and praying ... for them to improve, and yet they just don't.
Chief culprits have to be the third-rate 'posse' he's been lumbered with - Martin White and Danielle Ward. Neither seem to have much of any value to add during the main bulk of the show - why are they even there? Martin's sole opportunity to shine each week is his end-of-show song, which rarely raises even a tiny smile, and is sometimes just embarrassing. And "Ward's Weekly Word" is the single worst piece of regular radio I've ever heard - weak, ill-conceived and just plain unfunny; how on earth does this slot keep getting signed off? Does anyone actually think it's funny? Martin and Dave clearly don't - their sycophantic laughter during Danielle's car-crash of a feature is wholly unconvincing. My belief is that Dave is possibly just too hamstrung by Absolute's rules and limitations to really give his humour free rein; he never seems to display the genuine joy that typifies a lot of his better work.
And he is - still - so much better than this show would have you believe. I caught his recent Stand Up ... Sit Down etc tour, and he was absolutely on fire, so I'm certain that he's still got it. Unfortunately, this radio show does him no credit at all. A huge disappointment.”
