One clarification - when Winston breaks at the end of 1984, it isn’t over 2+2=5. That happens earlier in his torture. Instead, he turns on his love, Julia, and begs they put the rat cage on her face. The totalitarian left wants us brainwashed, but they also want us to turn on the people we love - even more horrendous, in my opinion.”
