A Light In The Darkness
Sullivan is the rare public figure that is (a) willing to voice and acknowledge the strength and weaknesses of various positions; and (b) capable of shining a novel and unique light on issues. Just as importantly, he is able to do so in a way that is accessible and disarming. My sole critique—and it is more of an issue with podcasts in general—is that I often find myself wishing he would ask followup questions on interesting points that arise. For example, in his episode with Beyer, Sullivan sets up a point about Beyer realizing Beyer is trans that begged the question of whether trans identity is at least partially a conservative worldview rooted in pigeon-holing certain activities as gender specific. Likewise, in his episode with Marusic and Hamid, they all voice surprise at the level of support Trump received in 2020 from adherents of various religions whose tenets seem antithetical to Trump, only to move on, leaving unasked the question of whether one drawback of these religious views vs humanism is a susceptibility to Trump-like demagoguery due to an unwillingness to question authority. All in all, this is now my go-to podcast for insightful, well-reasoned, level headed thinking and discussion.
