“A thorough and thoughtful discussion of the works of CS Lewis which gets better and better. Season One was Lewis’ Mere Christianity a book which is on one level clear and simple but which also has great depth and richness which this podcast brings out. Season Two deals with Lewis’ The Great Divorce, a modern day Dante’s Divine Comedy which sees the narrator travelling from Hell/Purgatory to Heaven and then being conducted by Lewis’ Virgil, George McDonald, a writer of fantasy who exerted a huge influence on Lewis. It is a short book that fizzes with ideas and is unlike any other albeit in its atmosphere it is reminiscent of the novels of Charles Williams, a fellow member of the Inklings. David and Matt provide an excellent commentary that brings out and develops the many ideas present within.
Season Three is a deep dive into a neglected work of Lewis called ‘Till we have faces’ a retelling of the Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche. I have always thought this one if Lewis’ most engrossing works even better than his science fiction trilogy and with similarities to his great unfinished work The Dark Tower. It has an unreliable narrator, a little like DuMaurier’s Rebecca and as a reader you yourself progress and develop in understanding with the main character Orual. I am very pleased that Matt and David are bringing this book back centre stage where it deserves to be in the Lewis oeuvre.
I very much admire their enthusiasm and the work and preparation they put into each episode. I have loved Lewis and devoured his books for many years but I have found this podcast enriching, bringing out many new ideas and perspectives. I hope others enjoy this as much as I do.”
