SUMMARY:At Sibyl’s home, she dances around happily now she is engaged to Dorian. Mrs Vane is less happy about the connection, and fears what Dorian, a rich gentleman, could want with a squalid actress, but also agrees that having connections to the wealthy would be beneficial. Sibyl’s brother is also hesitant about the match, but as he is going to leave the following day for Australia to start a new life, he can only ask his mother to watch over his sister. Upset with his mother’s feelings towards Dorian, he leaves the home to walk with Sibyl. Rather that discuss her Prince, Sibyl prompts her brother to fantasise about the possibilities that await him in Australia. She imagines him discovering gold or becoming a wealthy sheep farmer with a beautiful wife. James cannot get rid of the feeling that he is leaving his sister at a bad time. He has doubts about Dorian’s intentions, and his mother’s ability to protect Sibyl. Finally, he asks her about Dorian, and warns her against a potential heartbreak, swearing that he Dorian ever wrongs her, that he would kill him. Later that night, James confronts his mother about his father and their relationship. After confirming that she was never married to their father, James begs her not to let Sibyl meet the same fate, and then leaves.
