“I found this on Panoply and decided to listen because I think Ezra Klein is such a smart dude. But I can’t enthusiastically endorse the podcast, at least not yet. He is smart and thoughtful, but he inserted himself way too much into the conversation with inane, boring asides that went on for far too long. In discussing how Maddow decided to pursue a doctorate, we were treated to an aside about a monologue that Klein happened to think of from the movie Batman (I think?), with the actual dialogue inserted into the podcast in post-production. What? Why?
He has opinions about every topic, which is great for a writer, but not so much for an interviewer, and he interrupted Maddow multiple times to insert his ideas. It was like a dialogue that old friends might have over drinks at a party. That’s fine for the old friends at the party, but no one else needs to hear both ends of the conversation to that degree. The examples go on and on. The purpose of an interview is usually to get the guest’s perspective and he needs to learn to back off a bit. But I have hopes that he’ll get there.
Oh and maybe do without talking down to the listeners. I suppose there are people out there who don’t know who Sandy Berger is (was) but it felt very condescending that he assumed only he and his erudite guest understood a reference.
All that said, he’s super smart and I appreciate his writing. I’ll likely give him some time to see if he can work the kinks out and then come back.”
