Episode Highlights:
[00:51] Transitioning Into Transportation
Mark is the founder of Latitude, Longitude, and Logistics, and works with Amazon in the delivery service program. He spent 10 years in food service and brought the skills in management he gained as he shifted into the field of transportation and logistics. With December being their busiest month, Mark’s company manages over 60 vans on the road and 100 drivers working 14-hour shifts.
[06:18] The Challenges of Delivery
Earlier this year, Mark and his company struggled to get sufficient employees. Unfortunately, they had to change their drug-free policy to widen their workforce pool. Another challenge the delivery industry faces is a shortage of vehicles. Mark has purchased a few of his own and rented extra vans from other companies. However, cargo vans are difficult to find and while they can use box trucks, these can be inefficient in delivering packages.
[11:22] Electrical Vehicles for Delivery
Electrical vehicles are the next big thing in delivery service. Going into electrical means having high-tech and efficient vehicles and doing their part in helping the environment. However, they tend to have a huge demand for infrastructure and power that the supply chain is not yet ready to provide.
[18:47] The Future of Delivery Service
The future of drones and automated vehicles will still take a while. For now, delivery needs a human aspect. Mark is focusing on employee retention and building a workforce that is invested in their career in transportation. He wants to diversify into other companies and retailers getting involved in their own delivery programs and similar services.
Notable Quotes:
[[19:50] “For things as specific as delivery, you're going to need that human aspect.”
[22:19] “That's been one of our focuses, just to make it a really great place to work.”
[23:04] “I want to diversify into other companies.”
