“It’s clear from the Garrett podcast featuring Sophie Laguna that she has passion, in particular for writing. In this interview with Nic Brasch, Sophie tells the listeners how she loved to read, write and act from a very young age. Her enthusiasm is evident as she speaks about early influences like Doctor Seuss, and later ones like Helen Garner. She also makes it clear that her first love for many years was acting and her experience in the theatre world has spilled over into the stories she now writes for readers of all ages. With encouragement from her parents, teachers and, more recently, lecturers and peers in the RMIT Professional Writing and Editing course, Sophie has forged a successful career with several bestsellers and a Miles Franklin award (for The Eye of the Sheep). Her first picture book was accepted in 1999 (My Yellow Blankie) and her next book will be out in September this year (The Choke). When Nick Brasch asks Sophie about her writing methods she tells us that the characters build on the page as she writes and notes that many of her main characters are children – even in books for adult readers. This is perhaps unsurprising since she has two small children who occupy much of her time. However, Sophie cannot imagine a life without her writing and this interview will inspire all of us who are juggling multiple tasks that include that novel or picture book we hope will one day be a bestseller too.”
