Smart, funny, and fun!
I’ve been wanting to listen to this podcast for a while but wanted to listen to the episodes alongside the corresponding chapters and hadn’t had a chance yet. Now that I’m in quarantine and trying not to watch too much television, I’ve finally delved in! This show is excellent and a lot more well rounded than I thought based on what I knew going in! I definitely expected a thoughtful queer intersectional feminist lens on the Harry Potter series, which Jessie and Lark definitely deliver. They also manage to be critical of the series while still obviously loving it and dig into some of the peculiarities of the stories, writing, and world that strike me while reading but I typically put aside without examination. As a teacher, I thoroughly appreciate their education section! While I had certainly turned my nose up at individual teachers’ pedagogies while reading, I had never put it together into a reading of the school as a whole, and I find it so funny and spot on to hear them talk about what an actual horrible school Hogwarts is—both in ways I have considered (unqualified teachers, disproven teaching methods, numerous things that at fit the state of New York’s definitions of corporal punishment, etc.) and ways I hadn’t (nutrition? Too much homework? Are teachers in the U.K. not mandated reporters like I am?). I love the lens it puts on Harry Potter but also the ways it makes me examine my own pedagogy and views on child development generally. I also particularly appreciate the health and science section and their general attention to detail about the actual mechanics of this world. I am a big science fiction fan and only really enjoy fantasy when written with the intense detail to rules that good sci fi is and Rowling’s meticulous writing and world building is one of the reasons I love This series. However, the fact that this world is pretty solid makes it even more pleasurable to me when Jessie and Lark really explore some of the things that don’t make sense. Do centaurs have multiple sets of internal organs or just a VERY long digestive tract? If the gang fall a literal mile underneath the school wouldn’t they need more than a little bit of devil’s snare to keep them from actually splatting? Do animals transfigured into objects still need to eat? It’s hilarious but also really fun to exercise that part of my brain by going down a rabbit hole of exploring the logistics of things that don’t actually matter. It took me a while to figure out that a lot of seemingly far fetched (but not once they dig into them) they reference as cannon actually derived from another podcast, Witch Please, that inspired this one, but once I did I started listening to those as well. I’d highly recommend listening alongside the Jim Dale version of the audiobooks (Stephen Fry’s are excellent too but Jim Dale’s are just too good) and sort of wish I had them all spliced together (but don’t want to take the time to actually figure out how to make that happen on different platforms). It’s really fun and a great way to spend quarantine!!!

More reviews of The Gayly Planet
If you’re a bored (queer) Potterhead, this podcast is definitely for you! The format is dope and really allows the hosts to dive deep into each chapter and uncover some hard truths about the Harry Potter series, so be ready for that. Every episode is a wild ride of fun!

I’m now just two episodes from being up to date, and I’m devastated about this, I don’t want to have to wait for more content. As a half American, half...Read full review »
